"Korea Has Highest Rate of Low-Wage Workers among OECD Nations"

(Korean)

[INTERVIEW : Lee In-sup, Deputy Chairman ,Korea Union for Public Works ] ''Korea's minimum wage is near the bottom of the OECD figures, placed 17th out of 21 countries with a minimum wage level. But Koreans work the longest hours, clocking in roughly 22-hundred hours every year... while the OECD average stands at about 17-hundred-50 hours per year.''

The low wages make it challenging for many Korean workers to put bread on the table and educate their children.

[INTERVIEW : Song Mi-ok, Tollgate Clerk ,Gimpo Tollgate] ''I've been working for 11 years now as a tollgate clerk. For 11 years, I've been getting the minimum wage. Many of my colleagues are working mothers in their 40s and 50s, who are the breadwinners for their family. For working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, the minimum wage is just too little. With such low pay, it's difficult to educate children or even pay for gas to come to work.''
